THE WARM HAND OF FRIENDSHIP

Each day we hear stories of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants being forced to flee their homes because of war, famine, persecution, water shortage or climate change.

The invasion of Ukraine and the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees makes it all a bit closer to home.

Host Abingdon is a group of people who want to open our hearts and, where possible, our homes to the needs of people who have lost everything and need sanctuary. We extend the warm hand of friendship to refugees and asylum seekers who urgently need our help.

This is what we do

Since 2015 Host Abingdon has been raising funds for emergency accommodation, for destitute refugees and asylum seekers with our Sanctuary Fund. Right now we are providing accommodation for asylum seekers through the Sanctuary Fund in partnership with Asylum Welcome.

Host Abingdon has also supported families arriving in our area under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme with help on accessing services such as health, benefits and education. For four years each of the families was supported by our group of experienced volunteer family support workers.

Host Abingdon has operated an extensive English teaching programme and has a network of experienced volunteer English teachers.

We are now contributing to the Homes 4 Ukraine Scheme in very practical ways. In partnership with local churches we run a weekly International Welcome Café, English Language classes and we provide support for hosts when it is needed.

Search this website for ways in which you can help in the refugee crisis.
